FOR the countless Australians who raised a glass of the "national beer" yesterday, it was - for the first time in memory - a cloudy, malty ale rather than a crisp, blonde lager. While the full, heavier taste of Cooper's traditional brews from Adelaide doesn't appeal to all, the family company with only 4 per cent of the national beer market is technically our largest brewer. Foster's remains the biggest beer force in the nation, but the fact its market share had fallen as low as 48 per cent before it was taken over last month by London-based SABMiller says something is brewing.
