Looking Good PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 05 February 2012 00:00

The lineup for this year’s Good Beer Week in Melbourne is taking shape, with the 2012 festival set to be considerably bigger and – we hope – even better than last year’s triumphant debut. Event submissions closed on Australia Day, with around 80 registered across Melbourne and Victoria by breweries, beer bars, bottleshops, fine dining restaurants, cocktail bars, tour operators and more. They encompass everything from sorbets and chocolate to artwork and spit roasts, with a host of interstate and international breweries in attendance, plus the odd celebrity chef and, according to the festival’s events manager Kate Paterson, “even something to keep Star Wars fans happy”.

The Good Beer Week team is now compiling these proposed events into a program to run from May 12 to 19. The full program will be launched in print and online mid-March, giving punters two months to pick their favourite events and get prepared.

Lion slashes $213 million off liquor business PDF Print E-mail

By James Atkinson

Lion has blamed the general decline of Australia's beer market for a write-down of $213.2 million in its Australian liquor business.

The company yesterday revised the value of goodwill and brands on its balance sheet to reflect difficult trading conditions experienced during the 2011 financial year.

"Persistent poor global economic conditions have seen a sustained period of low consumer confidence and increased saving activity in Australia," the company said.

Radio Brews News gets almost regular PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 03 February 2012 10:17

Well, we’ve started the year well with two podcasts in two weeks and it’s a great one…if we do say so ourselves.

This week we interrupt Pete’s holiday to get his thoughts on the Ballarat Beer Festival, before quickly speaking with Brent Wright, National Beer Systems Manager for XXXX and find out a little about their new beer.

Regular listeners might be a little surprised that we are doing a segment on XXXX Summer Cloudy Ginger Beer but, in addition to being a conversation, beer is a broad church. The discussion looks at the new beer, how it’s made and some of the techniques brewers use to make beers targeted at the largest part of the beer market.

Finally, we catch up with Andrew ‘AG’ Gow, brewer at Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula Brewery. We have a wide ranging discussion about his career, his experiences at a variety of craft breweries and his current role at the recently established Mornington Peninsula Brewery.

We finish the show with what must surely be one of the greatest renditions of Beer Barrrel Polka ever, by Grady Martin and his Slewfoot Five. It simply has everything. You can buy it here, we recommend you do.

Brewery giant AB InBev is investigating a Sydney man's claim he found a foul-smelling mushroom-like object in a bottle of Beck's beer at an engagement party.

The man noticed something was wrong when he took his first swig from the bottle, his wife said.

"His beer tasted awful and he wiped off what looked like dirt from the bottle cap," the woman said in a post on viral news site reddit, under the username Seenbean.

Craft beer is so hot right now PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 30 January 2012 00:00

Well, as we look back on yesterday’s Australia Day festivities we can say, “what a day beer fans!”

The Local Taphouse’s Hottest 100 Aussie Craft Beers was announced in a rolling and excitement building process yesterday. With the first 90 beers names in batches of ten, the top ten were rolled out one at a time to the tune of Triple J’s Hottest 100 Songs.

The winners are listed below, and the Twitter discussion showed that opinions were as varied as the breweries and the beer styles on the list. But, to use a massively overused but still very apt cliché, beer was the winner on the day.

Beer’s back in Ballarat PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 28 January 2012 00:00

Ballarat has staked its claim as a hot ticket on the summer festival circuit following the resounding success of its inaugural Beer Festival.

The Saturday afternoon event held at Ballarat’s City Oval was supported by a glorious sunny and warm day, perfect for enjoying the many locally produced beers on offer alongside top quality live music. The ideal conditions brought along a larger crowd than anticipated. More than 3000 tickets were pre-sold, but the size of the walk-up queue was an extra delight for the festival’s organisers. With a capacity of 5000, up to 6000 patrons were rotated through the festival. However, a few hundred people seeking to buy tickets on arrival had to be turned away when the event was declared to be sold out at 2:00pm.

So much was the size of the crowd unexpected that many of the brewers ran very low or completely out of beer early in the afternoon.

A fight is brewing between the boutique beer brigade and Foster's and Lion PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 27 January 2012 08:57

FOR the countless Australians who raised a glass of the "national beer" yesterday, it was - for the first time in memory - a cloudy, malty ale rather than a crisp, blonde lager.

While the full, heavier taste of Cooper's traditional brews from Adelaide doesn't appeal to all, the family company with only 4 per cent of the national beer market is technically our largest brewer.

Foster's remains the biggest beer force in the nation, but the fact its market share had fallen as low as 48 per cent before it was taken over last month by London-based SABMiller says something is brewing.

"Craft" beers made by independent brewers remain small players - making up 2 per cent of the market, or 6 per cent if Cooper's is factored in.

Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 26 January 2012 07:46

If it’s as much of a mouthful as its name, then a new beer brewed especially for Australia Day should be worth hunting down. The snappily titled “100% Australian Owned Real Craft Brewed Australia Day Ale” has been produced by Sydney brewery Redoak to be launched on Thursday at their CBD venue and a handful of other bars across the country. The idea is to promote the drinking of beer brewed by breweries that are 100% Aussie-owned, with the resultant beer described as “a big Australian ale with a large amount of hops and fresh fruit flavours, a lovely mouthfeel and huge bitterness”, one that weighs in at 6.5% ABV.

It was brewed by Hollyoak on the day he launched the Australian Real Craft Brewers Association (ARCBA), a body designed to unite local craft brewers, shortly after the formation of fellow craft brewing association Craft Beer Limited.

Brewer branching out... into mining? PDF Print E-mail

By James Atkinson

An ASX-listed brewing company yesterday called a trading halt on its shares pending an announcement about its planned acquisition of three resources projects.

Western Australian company, Oz Brewing has endured a torrid time since it listed on the ASX in December 2006, raising $1.5 million to establish a restaurant and microbrewery in Fremantle.

It was eventually placed into administration into September 2008, following a curious move in November that year to acquire a controlling share in the steel housing and shed business, Shedco.

Having been reinstated onto the ASX last year, the company yesterday said it had entered into a heads of agreement to acquire three resources projects, with a further announcement expected later this week.

The company's new-look Board of Directors includes one Michal Safrata, who is also a non-executive director of ASX-listed companies Oroya Mining and Mammoth Resources.

Oz Brewing last year said it had raised nearly $3 million in additional funding to pay outstanding creditors and secure its reinstatement to the ASX.

It said the capital would also finance a new joint venture with Swan Valley's Ironbark Brewery, which would brew1200

Return of the yeasty boys (NZ) PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 01 February 2012 09:36

In a hop-heavy world, brewers are finding inspiration in centuries-old farmhouse styles, writes James Smith.

WITH some beers, it's all about the hops. In others, brewers are keen to showcase the malt characters. In the case of saisons - an increasingly popular farmhouse style with origins stretching back centuries to Belgium - the yeast is the key.

Perhaps that's why Costa Nikias, the founder of one of Australia's newest brewing companies, went to such trouble to get hold of a strain with which he was happy.

Beer ads dominated round four of Commercial Radio Australia’s 2012 Siren Awards with a Clemenger BBDO Melbourne campaign for Fosters Carlton mid-strength beer coming out on top.

The ‘Spending too much time with the wife?’ ad, written by Richard Williams and Ant Phillips from the Melbourne agency won the campaign and overall categories for round four of the Siren Awards.

Williams and Phillips said the inspiration for the ads, which use humour to remind men to spend time with their mates drinking beer, came from their friends and their significant others.

Drinks downturn hits bottle manufacturer O-I PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 28 January 2012 15:50

By James Atkinson

Glass packaging manufacturer Owens-Illinois (O-I) has attributed the downsizing of its Melbourne plant operations to a decline in Australian beer and wine consumption.

O-I, which recently developed the packaging for Carlton United Brewers' new Victoria Pale Lager, last week announced it will cut the number of furnaces at its Melbourne Plant from three to two and reduce the workforce by around 70 positions.

O-I Australia general manager Brian Slingsby said the decision followed ongoing deterioration in market conditions in Australia and weak consumer sentiment.

"This has led to declining food and beverage sales across the country, particularly in the beer and wine segments," he said.

Slingsby told TheShout per capita consumption of beer in Australia is at its lowest rate in around 60 years.

In the not so recent past there has been articles about the decline of and dearth of craft beer in Brisbane. For a time that was true. After the Platform bar gave up on the Craft Beer community there was little left for beer lovers in Brisbane. Recently this has all changed and the craft beer venues scene in Brisbane is now one of the best in the country.

Australia is to get its first ever dedicated sour beer brewery, after two of WA’s top brewers finalised plans to move into a joint facility. The decision of Nail and Feral to form Brewcorp and share a new 50 hectolitre brewery in Bayswater means Feral’s existing brewery in the Swan Valley will eventually be used to produce nothing but sour and wild ales and other funky Belgian styles. The remainder of Feral’s range will be switched over the course of the year to the shared facility, which will also allow Nail to ramp up its output significantly and supply its award-winning Ale and Stout to a wider audience.

“The vast majority of beers – 80 per cent – produced [at the existing Feral site] will be for our sour beer program,” says Brendan Varis, of Feral. “We need to be brewing beers now to sell in 18 months or two years time. It’s a different mentality for a brewer to make beers that take that long, rather than thinking three weeks ahead. It’s a pretty significant capital investment as we’ll have a dedicated filler for our sour bottles and dedicated tanks [to prevent contamination of other beers with the wild bacteria]. And if sour beer doesn’t catch on then I’m a pretty thirsty fella!”

SUPPORT ‘AUSTRALIAN’ INDEPENDENT REAL CRAFT BEER! PDF Print E-mail

Media Release

Get behind your local real craft breweries and drink Australian real craft beer this Australia Day!

With the recent sale of Fosters to foreign ownership, now over 91% of all beer sold in Australia is foreign owned.

While it is sad to lose such iconic brands, not all is lost as 100% Australian owned Real Craft Brewers with real passion for Craft Beer continue to rise to the challenge and fill the void. It’s our very own Real Craft Brewers who are providing diversity, initiative and creating exciting new craft beers.

That’s where Australian Real Craft Brewers Association (ARCBA) fits in.

Australian Real Craft Brewers Association Ltd is a national body established in late 2011 to represent independently owned real craft brewers who practice the ‘craft’ of brewing. The Association is passionate about Australian craft beer and supporting the craft beer movement.

To celebrate the formation of the Association, a beer brewed on the day of its incorporation in October 2011, will be making its debut. What better day to choose for its limited release than Australia Day!

The beer was brewed by our Chairman and has been donated to ARCBA and is aptly named ‘100% Australian Owned Real Craft Brewed Australia Day Ale”. Kegs will be served in select craft beer venues in capital cities around the country.

Tasting notes: “100% Australian Owned Real Craft Brewed Australia Day Ale” is a big Australian ale with a large amount of hops and fresh fruit flavours, a lovely mouthfeel and huge bitterness. 6.5% alc/vol.

There are other craft beer venues promoting specially brewed beers for Australia Day too – also included.

Get behind your local real craft breweries and drink Australian real craft beer!

Kind regards

David Hollyoak

Each year that the Hottest 100 Aussie Craft Beers poll has been run, it has doubled the number of votes of the previous year. Each year, voting has also usually been open for around 12 weeks. So, it’s quite something that in just one week the 2011 poll has already broken the record for the most votes ever made. Since being launched jointly last week by its founders, The Local Taphouse, as well as The Crafty Pint and Brews News, votes have flooded in, aided by the new voting system whereby voters select from a drop down list of beers rather than having to enter their choices manually. With more beers added to those lists since it went live, there are now well in excess of 800 to pick from!

Local Taphouse founder Steve Jeffares says: “Last year, voting for the Hottest 100 was open for 12 weeks but this year it has taken just one week to surpass the same number of voters as all of last year. It’s quite phenomenal really and an indication of how many people enjoy the sometimes tortuous task of selecting their favourite five Aussie craft beers of the year.“
