SIX years ago a roaming tongue and the insistent beat of the soundtrack that accompanied it put Toohey's Extra Dry on the map for hip Australian drinkers.
This week it launches the next step in that journey with an ad featuring a track from a new Australian musician in collaboration with the music producer Mark Ronson and a host of international recording artists.
Late last year Toohey's Extra Dry (TED) called for Australian music acts to apply for the job of working with Mr Ronson, John Taylor of Duran Duran, Alex Greenwald of Phantom Planet and the singer Santigold to compose a track for the new ad.

There are some basic guidelines to cooking with beer (choose darker, malty beers to add sweetness and hopped beers to counter richness), but experimentation in the kitchen is also key.
For example, when Helton first began making shepherd's pie, as former co-owner and chef of The Family Wash in East Nashville, she used Guinness, a stout beer. Then she tested a local brew that was also lighter, Yazoo's Sly Rye Porter. She said the musicians who frequented the Family Wash noticed the difference immediately — and liked it. "They said, 'What have you done?' "

Legend has it that St. Patrick used the three-leaved shamrock to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity to the pre-Christian Irish, which led to the display and wearing of the shamrock, also known as "the wearing of the green," on St. Patrick's Day. Wearing green has since expanded to include dying your hair green; dressing in green from head to toe; wearing shamrock glasses, headbands, necklaces and stickers; and pretty much incorporating the color green into your dress, your food and anything else you can think of on March 17.

There was a time when beer meant a slab of Speight's or a swappa crate. Now even supermarkets are making room for vast arrays of boutique brews. By Nikki Macdonald (The Dominion Post)
Beer enthusiast Simon Smith likes to buy single bottles of different brands: Photo: Craig SimcoxSimon Smith had always poohpoohed that watery brew drunk by ignorant louts. ‘‘It turns out I was probably that myself. I was quite happy drinking wine at the time. I thought beer was a commercial swill that came on large tankers from Auckland.''

Some of you have been asking me: "What are these hops you keep talking about?" This shouldn't surprise me, as hop flavour is a rarity in common beers. A shame really, as hops can contribute a shed load of diverse flavours to a beer. But to state it simply: hops contribute the bitter and dry flavours in beer. Without hops we wouldn't have beer as we know it today.
The hop flower is actually a relative of marijuana and grows on vines. In New Zealand, hops are primarily grown just outside of Nelson in a town called Riwaka. It is currently hop harvesting season, where the hop vines are fed into massive machines designed to remove the valuable hop cones from the vine. They are then kilned to keep them fresh till they reach the brew kettle. Two breweries have taken advantage of the abundance of fresh hops and have each created a beer which both showcase the remarkable and intense flavours possible with the generous use of hops.

Foster’s Group Ltd., Australia’s biggest brewer, expects to make more beers such as Big Helga and Fat Yak to tap demand for brews made using traditional methods and ingredients as consumers switch from mainstream brands.
“You will find explosive growth, underlined, in the craft segment,” Peter Sinclair, marketing director for the company’s Australian beer unit, CUB, said in an interview. “Without a doubt the trend toward premium beers is going to continue.”
The drink lineup is part of a push to compensate for falling sales of top-selling beer Victoria Bitter and declining profits at the Melbourne-based company’s wine unit. Brewing accounted for 85 percent of Foster’s earnings in the company’s most recent first half and 55 percent of revenue.
So-called craft brews and low-carbohydrate beers are among the fastest-growing segments of the nation’s A$13.5 billion ($12.1 billion) beer market, according to researcher Euromonitor International.
