INDUSTRY NEWS

BEER & BREWING NEWS

PACKAGED BEER DECLINES

Industry data shows packaged-beer volumes in the Australian market fell 4 per cent in the June quarter, with the overall liquor sector slowing 1.3 per cent, after having jumped 8 per cent one year ago, The Australian communicated on July, 28.

The news, however, is not all bad for Foster's, which has maintained market share at 49.9 per cent.

According to the Nielsen data, as analysed by UBS, Foster's flagship brand Victoria Bitter endured its eight successive quarter of volume-decline and is clearly the chink in the Foster's beer armour.

Of course, the mature beer market hasn't exactly been a go-go sector for years, but the brewers have extracted better pricing because of the trend to premium beers. This trend is abating. According to an analysis by UBS, beer pricing growth is still reasonable at 3 per cent growth, but - declining as a positive contributor, in line with easing inflation and comments from the brewers that pricing will be less of a driver going forward”.

While Foster's and Lion Nathan are steady on market share at 49.9 per cent and 40 per cent, respectively, the real beer winners are the privately-owned Coopers, which has bolstered its share from 3.5 per cent in 2005 to 4.2per cent. The Joint Venture (Blue Tongue) between CCA and SABMiller stands at 1.9 percent.

NEW BLUETONGUE BREWERY

The first Bluetongue Beer came off the line at its new brewery on Thursday 29th July 2010. Jennifer Hawkins and John Singleton were the "VIP's" invited to toast the first Bluetongue Premium Lager coming off the packaging line at the new $120 million Pacific Beverages-owned brewery on the Central Coast today.
Bluetongue Brewery started brewing its first batch just weeks ago. The brewery has taken just 18 months to become operational and boasts global state-of-the-art brewing technology.

Since being established just four years ago, Pacific Beverages has cornered approximately 10 per cent of the Australian premium beer market and the Bluetongue Brewery is designed in a modular format to allow for expansion as the company continues to increase its market share in Australia. The brewery has an annual capacity of 50 million litres, equivalent to about 6.5 million cases, and is easily expandable to 150 million litres over time.
Terry Davis, Chairman of Pacific Beverages and Group Managing Director Coca-Cola Amatil said, - The partnership between Coca-Cola Amatil and SAB Miller, one of the world's most successful brewers in our joint venture, Pacific Beverages, gives us access to some of the world's finest beer brands as well as access to brewing technology that has not been seen in Australia before now”.

John Singleton said, - It is an exciting day for the Bluetongue brand and signals the expansion of a great local Newcastle beer. Today's roll out of fresh Bluetongue off the line is a credit to the integrity of Bluetongue brand, its quality, taste and drinkability. We were so excited to have Jen taste the first Bluetongue with us today – like our beer Jen is another great Newcastle export”.

Jennifer Hawkins said, - I am thrilled to support a local brand and to see the impressive potential of the Bluetongue Brewery. I know it will become a proud landmark in my local region”.

Peter McLoughlin, CEO of Pacific Beverages said, - Pacific Beverages has created a state-of-the-art brewery, which has the flexibility to brew a variety of beers ranging from traditional European lagers to modern American and Australian beer styles in a sustainable manner.
- The new Bluetongue Brewery has been engineered for taste, quality and flexibility. We have brought in technologies that no one in Australia is utilising, such as sterile filling which means our beers are not heat pasteurised, and results in that wonderful brewery fresh taste. Exactly how the brewers like to drink it – straight from the tank.”

As well as the capability to fill 13 bottles a second, Bluetongue Brewery will also be kegging draught beer. This gives the brewery the potential to secure a foothold in the draught beer market, which accounts for a significant portion of beer consumed in Australia and allows more consumers to try and enjoy Pacific Beverages' portfolio of premium brands.

McLoughlin said, - Bluetongue Brewery has been specifically designed and constructed with flexibility in mind. We will be able to produce the majority of brands in the SABMiller global portfolio, to quickly identify trends, to stay ahead of the market and create real innovation in beer that will excite and delight our Australian consumer. True innovation will also come to the draught market, as we shake up the traditional draught arena with new offers and ensure our products are available to consumers and customers throughout Australia.”
Bluetongue Brewery is the first new brewery to be built in NSW in 40 years and is now its second largest brewery. The brewery will also be one of the most environmentally sustainable breweries globally. The sustainable initiatives focus on six key areas: water and energy consumption, product packaging, waste generation (water and solids), atmospheric emissions and considered land use.

SECTION AND REGIONAL MEETINGS

VICTORIAN SECTION

A technical meeting was held in Victoria on 22nd July where 27 IBD members and guests huddled together at Mountain Goat Brewery on a cold Melbourne night to listen to historian Dr Tanja Luckins' presentation on the 6 o'clock swill. The 6 o'clock swill refers to the hour between finishing work (5pm) and the pubs early closing time of 6pm and the rapid consumption of alcohol that would take place during this time. The laws regarding early closing were introduced during World War 1 and were in force in for over 50 years in some states in Australia. It was interesting to hear how this has shaped people's drinking habits and how it bought about the requirement for takeaway beer, to be drunk at home. There were some in the room who remembered the 6 o'clock swill vividly and some of us to whom it was a very foreign concept and this lead to many an interesting conversation over pizza and beers at the conclusion of the presentation.

If you are interested in reading more on the 6 o'clock swill, details for Tanya's articles are below and can be downloaded via the State Library of Victoria website and any public or university library which you may have access rights to. She has a book titled - The Australian Pub, a history of the pub in Australia” being published by UNSW Press in the next few months.

N.S.W. REGION

A Technical Meeting was held on Tuesday 20th July 2010 at Tooheys and was well attended with 26 members and guests. Nathan Calman gave a very interesting talk about his GEA Scholarship tour Drinktec and the GEA Plant in Europe last year. He then took the opportunity to visit a number of breweries in Europe and the UK on his own tour after the GEA programme was complete.

TRADITIONAL AMERICAN INDIAN WAYS

Wiremu, had long heard the stories of an amazing family tradition.

It seems that his father, grandfather and great-grandfather had all been able to walk on water on their 18th birthday. On that special day, they'd
each walked across the lake to the tavern on the far side for their first legal drink.

So when Wiremu's 18th birthday came 'round, he and his pal Rangi, took a boat out to the middle of the lake, Wiremu, stepped out of the boat ...and
nearly drowned! Rangi just barely managed to pull him to safety.

Furious and confused, Wiremu, went to see his grandmother.

'Grandma,' he asked, "It's my 18th birthday, so why can't I walk across the lake like my father, his father, and his father before him?"

Granny looked deeply into Wiremu's, troubled brown eyes and said,
"Because your father, your grandfather and your great grandfather were all born in August,
when the lake is frozen, and you were born in December, you idiot!

DONALD DUCK
Donald Duck and Daisy Duck were spending the night together in a hotel room and Donald wanted to have sex with Daisy.

The first thing Daisy asked was,

"Do you have a condom?"

Donald frowned and said, "No!"

Daisy told Donald that if he didn't get a condom,
they could not have sex.
'Maybe they sell them at the front desk,' she suggested.

So Donald went down to the lobby and asked the hotel clerk if they had condoms.

'Yes, we do,' the clerk said and pulled a box out from under the counter and gave it to Donald.

The clerk asked, 'Would you like me to put them on your bill?

"No!" Donald quacked, "I'll Thuffocate!"
